On passing out from IIT Chennai Mr. Narayanaswamy was offered scholarship by the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology , USA . He who came from a middle class family believed that he had a moral obligation to give something in return for the lakhs of rupees the government spent on him as an IIT student. He had the intelligence and conviction to realize that this money came also from the poorest of the poor - who pay up the excise duty on textiles when they buy cloth, who pay up customs, excise and sales tax on diesel when they travel in a bus, and in numerous other ways indirectly pay the government. So he decided to join IAS hoping he could do something for the people of this country. How many young men have the will power to resist such an offer from USA ? Narayanaswamy did never look at IAS as a black money spinner as his later life bears testimony to this fact.
After a decade of meritorious service in IAS, today, Narayanaswamy is being forced out of the IAS profession. Do you know why?
A real estate agent wanted to fill up a paddy field which is banned under law. An application came up before Narayanaswamy who was sub collector the, for an exemption from this rule for this plot of land. Upon visiting the site he found that the complaint from 60 poor families that they will face water logging due to the waste water from a nearby Government Medical College if this paddy field was filled up was correct. Narayanswamy came under intense political pressure but he did what was right - refused permission for filling up the paddy field. That was his first confrontation with politicians.
Soon after his marriage his father-in-law closed down a public road to build compound wall for his plot of land. People approached Narayanaswamy with complaint.
When talking with his own father-in-law did not help, he removed the obstructing wall with police help. The result, his marriage broke up.
As district Collector he raided the house of a liquor baron who had defaulted Rupees 11 crores payment to government and carried out revenue recovery. A Minister directly telephoned him and ordered to return the forfeited articles to the house of the liquor baron. Narayanswamy politely replied that it is difficult. The minister replied that Narayanaswamy will suffer.
In his district it was a practice to collect crores of rupees for earthen bunds meant for poor farmers, but which were never constructed. A bill for rupees 8 crores came up before Narayanaswamy. He inspected the bund. He found it very weak and said that he will pass the bill after the rainy season to ensure that the bund served the purpose. As expected the earthen bund was too weak to stand the rain and it disappeared in the rain. But he created a lot of enemies for saving 8 crores public money. The net result of all such unholy activities was that he was asked to go on leave by the government. Later such an illustrious officer was posted as "State Co-Ordinator, Quality Improvement Programme for Schools". This is what the politician will do to a honest officer with backbone - post him in the most powerless position to teach him a lesson. Since he found that nothing can be achieved for the people if he continued with the State Service he opted for central service. But that too was denied on some technical ground.
What will you do when you have a brilliant computer career anywhere in the world you choose with the backing of several advanced technical papers too published in international journals to your credit?
When you are powerless to do anything for the people, why should you waste your life as the Co-Ordinator for a Schools Programme?
Mr. Narayanaswamy is on the verge of leaving IAS to go to Paris to take up a well paid United Nations assignment. The politicians can laugh thinking another obstacle has been removed. But it is the helpless people of this country who will lose - not Narayanaswamy. But you have the power to support capable and honest bureaucra ts like Narayaswamy, G.R.Khairnar and Alphons Kannamthanam who have suffered a lot under self seeking politicians who rule us. You have even the power to replace such politicians with these kind of people dedicated to the country. The question is will you do the little you can do NOW? At least a vote or word in support of such personalities?

As President Barack Obama prepares to travel to India—the first American guest of honor to attend India’s Republic Day celebrations, it’s helpful to understand the history behind the day, and the significance of Prime Minister Modi’s invitation to Obama to attend the ceremonies. The history of Republic Day has some unique connections to the United States.

Indians celebrate Republic Day on January 26, a commemoration of the day the country formally became a republic in 1950—not to be confused with Independence Day, celebrated on August 15, marking the day the country achieved independence from the British in 1947.

India formally became a republic on January 26, 1950, the day the constitution came into force. The constitution itself had been ratified by the constituent assembly, a group of 299 representatives selected for the specific task of drafting a new constitution for the newly independent country, in November 1949. Before this day, India’s head of state was an appointed governor-general, not an (indirectly) elected president.
Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (1891-1956) led the drafting committee and he is widely considered the architect of the Constitution of India. Born a Dalit, below the caste structure in India and the group formerly called “Untouchables,” Ambedkar struggled against the caste discrimination that permeated Indian society and would eventually become a noted leader in social justice movements. He arrived in New York in 1913 to study at Columbia University, an unusual path at a time many Indians looked to the United Kingdom for higher education if they studied abroad.

Through his time at Columbia, Ambedkar expanded his ideas of social and political equality, and the ability of democratic institutions to achieve those standards based on his studies of the American experience. A superb web resource for Ambedkar’s work, particularly The Annihilation of Caste, has been developed by Columbia University’s Frances Pritchett. A recent book on the philosophical foundations of modern India, Ananya Vajpeyi’s Righteous Republic: The Political Foundations of Modern India, contains an excellent section on Ambedkar.

India’s constitution is the longest in the world. There are remarkable similarities between the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of India that exemplify the principles and values of democracy. Both founding documents begin with the words “we the people,” signifying the investment of political power in the people. India’s constitution similarly guarantees fundamental rights to all Indian citizens, and ensures individual freedoms. The preambles of both constitutions look to ensure justice, freedom, and liberty to their citizens:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

“WE, THE PEOPLE OF INDIA, having solemnly resolved to constitute India
into a SOVEREIGN SOCIALIST SECULAR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and
to secure to all its citizens:
JUSTICE, social, economic and political;
LIBERTY of thought, expression, belief, faith and worship;
EQUALITY of status and of opportunity;
and to promote among them all
FRATERNITY assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and
integrity of the Nation;

President Obama recognized Ambedkar for his extraordinary contributions to India in his address to the Indian parliament in November 2010. And this week, as the only U.S. president to travel to India twice while in office, Obama will join Indian Prime Minister Modi and President Mukherjee as the chief guest of the 66th Republic Day celebrations to experience one of the most vibrant parades in the world. Since 1950, India has invited foreign leaders to attend as the state guest of honor at the celebrations, and Obama is the first U.S. president to receive an invitation.

On January 26, parades and flag-raising ceremonies will take place across India, with the most impressive event at Rajpath in New Delhi. From the top of Rajpath, the wide central boulevard built by the British colonial-era architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in New Delhi, the view straight ahead reveals India Gate, a war memorial. Republic Day begins by remembering national martyrs, and is a day on which national honor awards will also be conferred.

The president of India, nominal commander-in-chief of the Indian armed forces, presides over the Republic Day parade, which follows a wreath-laying ceremony in memory of deceased members of the armed forces, a twenty-one gun salute, the unfolding of the Indian flag and the singing of the national anthem. The parade features military vehicles and equipment, followed by the procession of regiments of the armed forces, police, home guards, National Cadet Corps, cultural dances and children from across India, some riding on adorned camels and elephants. The finale is a sky parade of Air Force fighter jets over Rajpath.

An IPS officer, an old colleague is eying to become the next Chief Minister of Delhi. Kiran Bedi, a darling of the common man, particularly youth and women, has already started on her new role even before she is elected and sworn in. Knowing her I would think that she will have her eyes on the Prime Minister’s chair. Why not? If Theodore Roosevelt, the Police Commissioner of New York, could become President of the US, surely my ex-colleague can aspire for the most powerful job under our Constitution.

I first met Kiran Bedi in Hyderabad when she joined the Indian Police Service as a probationer. The novelty of seeing a woman probationer had just struck me and other males in the service. Let me confess that I was impressed with her enthusiasm and ebullience. She had been a national level tennis player. The physical part of police training was not a problem with her and even at that stage one could sense a spark and a confidence that spoke of greater things to come.

I had an occasion many years later as Special Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs to ask Kiran to accept an assignment in the National Police Academy at Hyderabad. The Director of the Academy, A.A. Ali, wanted a woman officer on his staff since the intake of women IPS probationers was increasing year by year. She would have been a great asset in the shaping of our future police leadership. I was greatly disappointed when she said ‘No’ though eventually I did find a good substitute in the person of Manjari Jaruhar of the Bihar Cadre of the IPS. Manjari wore a sari and sported a ‘bindi’ on her forehead after duty hours, unlike Kiran who preferred masculine attire.

Kiran Bedi was not willing to leave Delhi; the city was her happy stomping ground. One reason could have been her daughter for whom she had managed to secure a medical seat, when she was briefly posted to Mizoram. I had heard some murmurs at that time that she had not played fair in appropriating a seat meant for Mizo tribals. I remember that Kiran put up a very spirited defense for her questionable decision. The ability to justify some wrongs will surely help her to further her career in politics.

My other recollection of her was when she was awarded the Magsaysay Award. I had been approached by a well-known businessman in Mumbai with Philippine contacts, based on his stint in the Asian Institute of Management in Manila, for a résumé of my work in the police for submission to the Magsaysay Award committee. The committee had decided that year to give one prize to a police officer from India and had narrowed the choice to two. I was warned that there was another candidate who had also been recommended. It was only after her name was published that that I realized that the other candidate was my friend Kiran Bedi. I hastened to congratulate her. In her reply she told me she was going to form a Trust with the prize money and requested me to serve as a Trustee. I consented.

I did not hear further about the Trust till years later a television crew popped up at my door asking me to comment on Kiran’s travelling by air on economy class tickets but claiming business class fare from corporates inviting her for speaking engagements. The money gained thereby had been credited to the Trust. When the T.V. channel learnt that I was a Trustee (a fact that I had by then forgotten) they sought my views on her way of financing her charitable work. My reply was that I would not do what Kiran had done but since she had not diverted money for personal use it was only a technical default, but certainly not a crime.

What did strike me though about this entire episode was that Kiran ran the Trust on her own without involving other Trustees as would be expected. She had included my name as a Trustee as a mere formality. I had not been informed about meetings or decisions taken nor did I receive any reports on the work done by the Trust for years together till this allegation surfaced. This is Kiran all over. She likes being the sole boss.

Nobody can doubt Kiran Bedi’s integrity or capabilities. Her problem was that she attracted the jealousy and unspoken enmity of her seniors and her peers since she always hogged the limelight. Her style of functioning also disturbed the politicians then in power. They were perennially in the popularity business and did not like to be eclipsed by a mere police officer. They overlooked the fact that Kiran’s popularity was based on her proven track record of genuine service to the people.

Kiran is very passionate about whatever she does. But her propensity to become the centre of attraction might lead her into conflict with her new found colleagues in the BJP who will find the ground shifting under their feet. Knowing Kiran I can safely say that she is not going to change. She has already started her work as a Chief Minister though elections are a month away. This is typical Kiran; she has no time to waste. As she herself said she is in the ‘mission mode’ and she will remain in that mode for many more years to come.

Before I end, there is a word of thanks I must convey through this piece to the future Chief Minister of Delhi. When I was sent to the Punjab to fight the separatists, RK Laxman drew a front page cartoon in the Times of India a copy of which my friend Kiran procured from the cartoonist himself and presented to me as a token of her appreciation for “taking on the nation’s battle”. I will not forget that gesture

Ford Motor Co. - Six months before Pearl Harbor

The footage of this old film is truly amazing, and you have to give the Ford Motor Co. a lot of credit for the incredible amount of ingenuity used to manufacture these planes. The pilots that flew them for the first time were gutsy guys. A real piece of history.

This was 6 months BEFORE Pearl Harbor! Henry Ford was determined that he could mass produce bombers just as he had done with cars, so he built the Willow Run assembly plant in Michigan and proved it. It was the world's largest building under one roof at the time. This film will absolutely blow you away - one B-24 every 55 minutes .. . . and Ford had their own pilots to test them.
